Instrumented and non-instrumented surgery of the spine and craniocervical junction.
Non-instrumented surgery does not imply the use of hardware, such as screws and rods. This is the case for around half of all spine surgeries. In this case, the surgeon removes a hernia or widens the canal through which the spinal cord or nerve roots pass.
In the case of instrumented surgeries, the surgeon must add screws to stabilize the back. These surgeries are often more complex, but not necessarily riskier. They do, however, require extensive experience and preparation of the patient for the operation. The post-operative period must also be perfectly and extensively controlled.
