Young Children and Screens

With the rapid rise of new technologies, most Western households now have at least one screen. Phones, tablets, computers, and televisions surround young children as they grow up. However, these screens can affect their developing brains. Scientific evidence now shows that screen use can interfere with language development, among other things, and may lead to delays in acquiring language. Screens can also reduce social interactions and limit children’s ability to develop three-dimensional skills, since screens present information in only two dimensions. A baby’s brain does not yet know how to process this virtual information, which is often not appropriate for their stage of development, and it can interfere with learning from the real world. Additionally, when adults use screens in front of children, it can create a barrier to communication, excluding the child from interaction.
